In früheren Studien verfolgte er das Thema sprachphilosophisch, indem er fragte, was einen Glauben glaubbar macht. Dies führte ihn zu der Frage, welchen Einfluss die kulturellen Bedingungen auf den Glauben haben. Im Jahr 2000 eröffnete er mit seiner vielbeachteten Studie Cities of God eine zunächst auf zwei Bände angelegte Reihe zur Verhältnisbestimmung von Postmoderne und Theologie, die 2009 als Trilogie mit dem Band The Politics of Discipleship abgeschlossen wurde. Zusammen mit seinen Lehrern, dem Dominikaner Fergus Kerr und dem heutigen Erzbischof von Canterbury, Rowan Williams, sowie dem Nottinghamer Theologen John Milbank gehört er heute zu den einflussreichsten englischsprachigen Theologen. Er veröffentlicht  und lehrt zu Fragen der kulturellen Hermeneutik, der Sozialethik und zur Politischen Theorie. Als Herausgeber betreut er die Buchreihen Radical Orthodoxy (bei Routledge), Christian Theology in Context (bei Oxford University Press) und Illuminations: Religion & Theory (bei Blackwell).

Short biography

His fascination with Christian theology started with the question how faith is represented. In earlier studies he treated the subject in a linguistic philosophical way asking what makes faith believable. This led to the question of what influence does cultural conditions have on faith. In 2000 he initiated a series with his highly praised Study Cities of God. At first it was intended to go over two volumes and address the relationship between post modernism and theology. This series will be concluded in 2008 as a trilogy. Together with his teachers, the Dominican Fergus Kerr and the present Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, as well the Theologian John Milbank, he is one of the most influential English-speaking theologians working today.
